Emissions Testing
Emissions testing is something that you may be required by law to have performed on your exhaust system. Car emissions are managed by the Environmental Protection (EPA) Agency, and auto emissions are a large environmental concern. Exhaust emission and car emission create pollutants that can be harmful to human health as well as the planet.
In the United States, the EPA rules for emissions testing can be followed by individual states. However, the state of California has more stringent auto emissions guidelines and their special dispensation from the government allows other states to adopt the exhaust emission standards of California. You will be informed of any car emissions testing required when you register your vehicle or go in for plates. If you haven’t met your state requirements for exhaust system testing you won’t be given a registration.
However, not all states require regular emissions testing and some only require newer vehicles to be checked annually. Although most states do require you to have your auto emissions tested, the variability among states is tremendous. California is by far the most stringent in their rules for exhaust system maintenance and testing. The few exempted vehicles include diesel, electric powered, hybrids, and gas powered vehicles weighing more than 14,000 pounds. Also exempted are motorcycles, trailers and vehicles less than 6 years old. However, if you drive Michigan or South Carolina you won’t be asked about any emissions testing. It’s important to check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles if you relocate so that you are in compliance.
