2002 MINI Cooper Review
The MINI Cooper has a heralded and notable history around the world. Even here in the United States, where the car saw minimal exposure, the prospect of having a modern version of the MINI has gathered a windstorm of enthusiasm. Now it's getting extraordinary attention in a country where people had little or no contact with the original car.
In Europe, the enthusiasm can be expected. We've talked with hordes of Europeans who have a long list of memorable experiences with the MINI, from childhood to adolescence and coming of age. One can understand and expect to have the riffle of enthusiasm with that kind of history. But why, here, on this side of the pond? It is, in part, the inherent need for remembrances, real or perceived, past or yet to be made.
In the mid-to-late-1960s, the MINI was a warrior in the rally world. It captured the Monte Carlo rally championship in 1964, 1965 and 1967. It was a miniature car that made a major impact on the hearts and souls of thousands of people. With BMW's influence, the new MINI Cooper is a fantastic vehicle. Although we had a few concerns, we came away from our test with admiration for the car and a desire to remain behind the wheel for many more hours. This car is just plain fun to drive.
